![]() ![]() Jim Halterman: How did the project come to you? Was it due to the fact that 'Pretty Little Liars' did so well out of the gate for ABC Family? ![]() Our Jim Halterman rang up "The Lying Game" Executive Producer (and SVP of Alloy Entertainment's television division) Gina Girolamo to talk some of the differences between the books and the series, the resemblance to that other twin-centric series (The CW's upcoming "Ringer" with Sarah Michelle Gellar) and what actress Alexandra Chando had that other actresses didn't to land the lead role. ![]() However, as is typical for Shepard's stories, things are not exactly what they seem and mystery and intrigue - with a not-so-little dose of teen issues thrown in - become a driving force in the narrative. In "The Lying Game," twin sisters Emma and Sutton (who were separated at birth and have secretly found each other on the internet) devise a plan where Emma takes over Sutton's life in hopes of finding their real birth parents. With the huge success of its teen mystery series "Pretty Little Liars," which was adapted from the popular book series by Sara Shepard, it's no big surprise that ABC Family is taking a similar route with its latest series, "The Lying Game," which is also based on another series penned by Shepard. Smith’s distinctive voice―curious, lyrical, and wry―examines what it means to be a citizen, a mother, and an artist in a culture mediated by wealth, men, and violence. These are poems of varying scale: some capture a glimpse of song or memory some collage an array of documents and voices and some transcend the known world into the mystical, the sacred. ![]() Smith explores America’s present and past with a keen eye and a lyrical voice in Wade in the Water, a collection of poems that connects our contemporary moment to our nation’s complex history and to a sense of the eternal. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But before he can win her family's affection, he has to win hers first. They’re all 16 and out of school for the summer, looking for things to do, and one day they find out that a traveling vampire show is coming through their town, with a supposedly lovely mistress as the vampire. Laymon’s 2000 Bram Stoker award-winner takes us all back to the 1960s (or in my case, for the first time), focusing on a boy named Dwight and his friends, Slim and Rusty. Yet I picked The Traveling Vampire Show out at a Barnes & Noble, wanting to read what everyone was talking about, and was sure glad that I did. His name gets so bogged down with the weight of names like Stephen King that one can go years without experiencing one of Laymon’s novels. To be honest, I had never read a Richard Laymon book before this one. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sean also suggests to the senior management the use of negative 25 for the cover of the last edition. It's also not a book for people who can't handle nuance about things that should not be nuanced. This is not a book for people who can't handle criticism of the Catholic church. The main female protagonist of this book has sex with a great many people during the course of the book, both male and female, including an underage boy, although she didn't know he was underage at the time-but she also didn't ask-and I am so not okay with anything about that scene and it makes me feel sick just thinking about it and the main male protagonist is married (although he and his wife are separated, and his wife had an affair with another man). I am recommending this book, but I should be very, very clear and let you all know that if you read this, expect pain. There's no way to talk about this without including spoilers, so I'm going to spoiler tag liberally. If I were grading this book based on how comfortable it made me feel, it would probably be right around zero stars. There is so much in this book that just blows past my comfort zones. This is not a traditional romance, and most people would probably say that this is not a romance at all. I just want to make things clear right off the bat. ![]() ![]() In Lincoln Pratt, Brock sees the part of himself he thought he’d lost. In Brock Shaw, Lincoln sees the part of her that’s missing.
